The annual International Women’s Day will be celebrated this Saturday, March 8 by people all around the world. Thousands of events will occur to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. This year’s theme is “Inspiring Change”, a theme that fits well with IUGA’s mission and the efforts of its members. The daily nature of an IUGA member’s work involves educating patients, their families and the community to remove the negative perspective often associated with prolapse and incontinence. Our members are volunteering in sub Saharan Africa and other parts of the world to repair fistulae, train other urogynecologists and perform life-changing surgeries for women who could otherwise not afford it. Thank you to our members, who inspire change throughout the world every day. For more information about International Women’s Day, please visit http://www.internationalwomensday.com/theme.asp#.UxdN3IV9O-Q.

2014 volume 1 official newsletter available online
In December 2013, the board decided to eliminate the hardcopy distribution of the official newsletter and switch to online only. Volume 1 of the 2014 official newsletter is now available on the members only section of the web site, in both PDF format and digital reader format. To access the newsletter, please click here. If you are not logged-in to the IUGA web site, you will be prompted to do so.  If you don’t recall your user id or password to access the members-only section of the IUGA website or have questions regarding the newsletter, please contact Amy Cassini, Membership Manager, at amy@iuga.org and she would be pleased to help you.

Status of IUGA Grants
In the February 2014 newsletter, which was distributed on Feb. 21, IUGA Treasurer Anna Rosamilia explained that due to financial challenges facing the association that the board had made a number of difficult cuts to the budget for this year.  Among these, the board decided that IUGA grants, including international fellowships, observerships, and research grants, would be suspended this year.  However, the board and staff are currently investigating the possibility of securing external support for these grants.  If such support is secured, members will be  contacted immediately.  The board is hopeful that by stabilizing IUGA’s finances and securing external support, that the IUGA grant program will be reintroduced after this year.

Annual Meeting Selection Process Update and 2017 Annual Meeting Location
In the December 27th,  January 3rd and January 10th weekly e-mail blasts, IUGA requested feedback from members regarding a new selection process for annual meetings. The process would involve a three-year rotation that will see the annual meeting in North America one year, in Europe the next year and somewhere in the rest of the world in the third year.  The rotation would then be repeated. The IUGA Board believes that this rotation will provide a good balance between ensuring the financial viability of IUGA and the desire to bring a focus on urogynecology to parts of the world where it is not as well understood or appreciated.

The office received positive feedback from members regarding this issue and the board has therefore decided to move forward with the three-year rotation.  This rotation has, in fact, already begun as the 2014 annual meeting will be in North America, in Washington, DC, the 2015 meeting will be in Nice, France, and the 2016 meeting will be in Cape Town, South Africa.  Following this cycle, the 2017 meeting would be appropriate to hold in North America.

The IUGA Board is therefore pleased to announce the 2017 meeting will be held in Vancouver, Canada, the only location in North America that submitted a bid for that year. Information about this meeting will be added to the IUGA web site as it becomes available. The IUGA Board and staff look forward to working with the Canadian local committee to plan a highly successful and exciting meeting in yet another breathtaking location.
